Speaker:

Hi, this is Stephanie Maas, and today I want to talk to you about a luxury we no longer have in today's employment world, and that is the luxury of training or rather not training our employees.

Speaker:

One of the phenomenons that I have been following in my niche over the course of the last 10 years is just the development of Talent sometimes it's just learning about the next generation in the Millennials.

Speaker:

Everybody loves them Another perspective is what's actually happening in the workplace for those of you that are bankers.

Speaker:

You'll remember 10 15 20 years ago training programs were abundant Today, they're almost non existent.

Speaker:

Combine that with a rising retirement population, meaning a growing number of folks leaving the workplace every single year, plus the fact that many of us just in our normal nine to five, which for most of us is no longer nine to five.

Speaker:

It's more like 730 to 630.

Speaker:

Go home, have dinner, be with the kids, put them to bed and then work for another two hours.

Speaker:

We just don't have the time to really train folks as they are needed to be successful.

Speaker:

And training, by the way, happens at all kinds of different levels.

Speaker:

Sometimes it's taking somebody that's on a track and just accelerating it.

Speaker:

For some, it is starting over at the beginning.

Speaker:

But unfortunately, this is a practice that we no longer have the luxury.

Speaker:

Yes, you can pay people more and try to attract better talent with compensation.

Speaker:

You can pay more to retain your talent.

Speaker:

But what can we do today?

Speaker:

We have got to get back to the business of training.

Speaker:

Forget formal training programs.

Speaker:

Hardly anybody has one anymore.

Speaker:

So to expect a training program?

Speaker:

To do any of the training that is necessary, forget it.

Speaker:

It just, it doesn't exist.

Speaker:

Leaders, it is time to roll up your sleeves.

Speaker:

Shoulder to shoulder and really look at your role as a mentor, a trainer, and a developer.

Speaker:

Again, I know you're overworked.

Speaker:

You don't have enough time as it is, but unfortunately you are the last generation that has had that formal training.

Speaker:

So go teach what you know and train, train, train.

Speaker:

It is an absolute mandatory part of what we do, how we lead, and if you any chance of being able to retain good talent, training has to be a foundation of their work experience.
